Proof of funds for Express Entry is 15,263 for a single applicant, in Canadian dollars, under the IRCC table updated July 7, 2025, and rises with family size. Canadian Experience Class applicants, and those authorized to work here with a valid job offer, are exempt. This calculator also estimates study permit funds by application date.
This is an estimate, not legal or immigration advice. Only IRCC / CRA / Service Canada decide your case – check the official source before you act. Data checked: 2026-10-27. This independent calculator is not from, endorsed by or connected to IRCC or the Government of Canada.
How to use the proof of funds calculator
- Choose Express Entry (settlement funds) or Study permit (living expenses). The two modes use different tables and are never combined.
- Enter your family size. The definition depends on the mode, and the help text under the field changes when you switch:
- Express Entry: you, your spouse or common-law partner, your dependent children and your partner’s dependent children – even if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, or are not coming with you.
- Study permit: you (the student) plus only the family members who will come with you to Canada.
- For Express Entry, pick your program (FSW, FST or CEC) and say whether you are authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer.
- For a study permit, pick where you will study, the application date range (it defaults to today’s date), and enter your first-year tuition and transportation cost in Canadian dollars. You can enter cents.
- Select Calculate to see the amount, the table row used and what counts as proof.
How the Express Entry amount is worked out
IRCC publishes a fixed settlement-funds table by number of family members. The calculator looks up your row. For more than 7 family members, it takes the 7-member amount and adds 4,112 for each extra person: 40,392 + (family size − 7) × 4,112. For example, a family of 9 needs 40,392 + 2 × 4,112 = 48,616. All figures on this page are in Canadian dollars (CAD).
| Family members | Funds required (CAD) |
|---|---|
| 1 | 15,263 |
| 2 | 19,001 |
| 3 | 23,360 |
| 4 | 28,362 |
| 5 | 32,168 |
| 6 | 36,280 |
| 7 | 40,392 |
| Each additional member | +4,112 |
You don’t need to show these funds if you apply under the Canadian Experience Class, or if you are authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer – even under the Federal Skilled Worker or Federal Skilled Trades programs. In that case the tool shows “Not required”.
For what counts as proof, IRCC asks for official letters from your bank or financial institution. The money must be available both when you apply and when your permanent residence visa is issued, and you can’t use money borrowed from another person or equity in property. Study permit proof of funds and other proof of funds in Canada
Proof of funds for a study permit (sometimes called a Canada student visa) works differently. IRCC lists living expenses by family size for every province and territory except Quebec. Here, family size means you (the student) plus the family members who will come with you to Canada. These amounts exclude tuition and transportation, so the calculator adds your own first-year tuition and travel cost on top. Which table applies depends on the date you submit your application.
| Family members | Jan 1, 2025 – Aug 31, 2026 (CAD) | On or after Sept 1, 2026 (CAD) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 22,895 | 23,448 |
| 2 | 28,502 | 29,192 |
| 3 | 35,040 | 35,888 |
| 4 | 42,543 | 43,572 |
| 5 | 48,252 | 49,419 |
| 6 | 54,420 | 55,736 |
| 7 | 60,589 | 62,054 |
| Each additional member | +6,170 | +6,318 |
Example: a single student applying on October 27, 2026 with 20,000.50 in tuition and 1,500.25 in travel (Canadian dollars) needs 23,448 + 20,000.50 + 1,500.25 = 44,948.75. If you will study in Quebec, Quebec sets its own amount for the CAQ, so the tool links to the Quebec government page instead of showing a number.
Proof of funds for a visitor visa to Canada is not covered here: the sources this tool uses don’t publish a fixed visitor amount. Check IRCC’s visitor visa guidance for what to include.
Methodology & sources
The calculator uses the published IRCC amounts exactly, in whole dollars, and does no forecasting. The tuition and transportation you enter are rounded to the nearest cent and added to the table amount, so the parts shown always add up to the total. Data checked: 2026-10-27.

FAQ
How much proof of funds do I need for Express Entry?
Under the IRCC table updated July 7, 2025, a single applicant needs 15,263, a family of 3 needs 23,360 and a family of 7 needs 40,392 (amounts in Canadian dollars). Each additional family member above 7 adds 4,112.
Who does not need proof of funds for Express Entry?
You don’t need to show settlement funds if you apply under the Canadian Experience Class, or if you are authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer, even under the Federal Skilled Worker or Federal Skilled Trades programs.
Who counts in my family size?
For Express Entry, count yourself, your spouse or common-law partner, your dependent children and your partner’s dependent children, even if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents or are not coming to Canada with you. For a study permit, count yourself (the student) plus only the family members who will come with you to Canada.
How much money do I need for a Canadian study permit?
For applications on or after September 1, 2026 (outside Quebec), IRCC lists 23,448 in living expenses for one person, in Canadian dollars, plus your first-year tuition and transportation. Applications from January 1, 2025 to August 31, 2026 use the earlier amount of 22,895 for one person.
Does this calculator cover Quebec or visitor visas?
No. Quebec sets its own amount for the CAQ, so the tool points you to the Quebec government’s cost-of-studies page instead of showing a number, and it does not estimate funds for visitor visas.
