Express Entry FAQ — Canada Immigration Questions Answered (2025)
Practical answers to the most-asked Express Entry questions: how the CRS scoring works, what documents you need after an ITA, current processing times, proof-of-funds thresholds, and strategies to maximize your points.
What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is Canada’s online application management system for three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Eligible candidates create an online profile and are ranked against others in the pool using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The highest-ranked candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence during regular draws.
How does the CRS score work?
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) awards up to 1,200 points based on four factors: core human capital (age, education, language, work experience) up to 500 points, spouse factors up to 40 points, skill transferability up to 100 points, and additional points up to 600 (including a provincial nomination worth 600, a valid job offer worth 50 or 200, Canadian study, French-language proficiency, and sibling ties).
What CRS score is needed to get an ITA in 2025?
Recent category-based and general Express Entry draws have issued ITAs to candidates with CRS scores typically between 400 and 530, depending on the draw category. Category-based draws targeting French speakers, healthcare workers, STEM occupations, trades, transport, and agriculture/agri-food often use lower cutoffs than general draws.
What documents are required for an Express Entry application?
After receiving an ITA you must upload: valid passport/travel document, language test results (IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, TEF Canada, or TCF Canada), Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report from IRCC-designated organizations, proof of work experience (reference letters on company letterhead), police certificates from every country you have lived in for 6+ months since age 18, recent passport-style photos, and proof of settlement funds.
How long does Express Entry processing take in 2025?
IRCC’s service standard for Express Entry permanent residence applications is 6 months from the date of complete application submission after receiving an ITA. Most well-prepared applications are processed within 5 to 7 months; complex cases can take 8 to 12 months. PR-card issuance after landing adds another 2 to 6 weeks.
What is the difference between CEC and FSWP?
The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is for candidates with at least 12 months of skilled work experience in Canada (within the 36 months before applying) and requires NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 work experience. The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is for candidates with foreign or Canadian skilled work experience, requires at least 67 points on the FSWP grid, and demands an ECA. Both feed into the same Express Entry pool.
How much settlement funds do I need for Express Entry?
Proof of Funds requirements for 2025 (in CAD): 1 family member $14,690, 2 members $18,288, 3 members $22,483, 4 members $27,297, 5 members $30,690, 6 members $34,917, 7+ members $39,091. Funds must be readily available, in a bank account held by you or your spouse, and unencumbered by debt.
Can I get an Express Entry ITA without a job offer?
Yes. A valid job offer is not required for Express Entry. Most ITAs are issued to candidates without job offers, who are ranked purely on CRS score. However, a valid LMIA-based or LMIA-exempt job offer adds 50 or 200 additional CRS points, and a provincial nomination through a PNP stream linked to Express Entry adds 600 points.
